Our International Students

We have a dynamic International Student Program with students enrolled from around the world including places such as Vietnam, China, Iran, Singapore, Africa, Cambodia, Brazil, Indonesia, Europe and Malaysia.

On arrival, students and their families/guardians undertake a comprehensive Orientation program as part of the enrolment process and receive ongoing assistance and well-being with their transition to studying at a new school in a different country.

Separate EAL English classes exist for all students from Years 7-10 and for VCE based on eligibility. Additionally, English Extension is offered at Year 9 & 10. An afterschool Homework Club with tutors runs weekly for all international students in the school library.

All students attend weekly Home Group sessions with a focus on developing essential skills for learning and life – goal setting, mindfulness, character strengths, and a range of learning and well-being strategies. Additionally, VCE students attend weekly Tutorial sessions with a focus on building study skills and learning strategies for academic success and social development.

Student Leadership and Extra-Curricular Program

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities available at the school which include environmental and art clubs, debating and music/performance opportunities. A range of activities and clubs are offered on a term basis.

The following leadership roles are open to international students: Student Representative Council, International Student Captain and Vice-Captain, and Well-Being Year Level Leader.

All new students partake in a Buddy Program where they are teamed with another student to assist with transition and forming relationships. Similarly, the International Student Well-being Team provides student voice and active decision making in the overall International Student Program.

In addition to educational experiences and curriculum-linked excursions/incursions at each year level, organised activities for our international students to enhance their understanding of Australian life and culture, to develop friendships, and to enrich their life experiences include the Lunar New Year Celebration, Welcome Picnic, Water Park Excursion, Snow Trip and Collective Birthday Party celebrations. Please check our International Program Activities page

On-Campus Language Centre: Intensive English Language Program

An on-campus English Language Centre opened in 2019 and delivers an Intensive English Language Program (IELP) to support Collingwood’s international students with their language development and emotional/social well-being. Students undertake a rigorous 20 week language program to acquire the skills and language proficiency needed for entering mainstream classes. Additionally, students attend regular curriculum-linked excursions/incursions to develop an awareness of Melbourne and Australian culture. The Language Centre supports and provides the highest level of best learning and teaching practice by qualified EAL teachers. There is an intake of 15 students only each semester. The centre includes two spacious classrooms, a student lounge with microwave facilities and comfortable furniture with tables for individual/collaborative study.
